An alternative to Character.AI, for people who want fewer characters

Why people use Character.AI

It is free, it is enormous, and anyone can add to it. Millions of characters other people wrote, sitting there for nothing. If you want to write one yourself there is a Definition field of up to 32,000 characters for identity, dialogue examples and behavioural rules, a voice to pick, a Persona you write for yourself, and a guide that walks you through it. Nothing we have built competes with that on choice or on price, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

Why people start looking anyway

Usually memory. Character.AI treats it as a budget inside one conversation: you pin the messages that matter, five a chat free and roughly twice that on c.ai+, and anything pinned or written into Story Memory is protected while the rest is compressed as the bar fills. It works, and it is also homework. You end up curating a relationship — deciding in advance which parts of a Tuesday deserve to survive it. And when you close the tab, nothing is happening. The character was only ever there while you were.

If you are here because of the under-18 change

In late November 2025 Character.AI stopped open-ended chat for users its system assesses as under eighteen, and gave them a different experience instead. If that is why you are reading this, we are not the answer, and we want to be flat about it rather than helpful about it. Parallel is eighteen and over, we check, and we are the stricter service of the two in that direction and not the looser one. Nothing on this site is a way round anyone’s age rules, including ours. Our own are written out on the safety page, in the words we enforce them in.

Who Parallel is not for

This part first, because it saves you a fortnight. If what you like is the browsing — a new character every evening, an anime lead on Monday and a tutor on Wednesday — Parallel will feel small and expensive. Thousands of people, not millions. One relationship at a time, no group chats. Nothing to write, no Definition field, no Persona, no pinning, and no library to go shopping in when tonight is not working out. Character.AI does all of that, and does it for nothing.

They also ship things we do not ship at all: live calls in a character’s voice, video through AvatarFX, group chats, and apps on both stores. We send voice notes and generate photos, not calls or video, and we’re web-only, today, and a paid subscription after the trial. If price is what you are deciding on, stay where you are.

Who it is for

People who have already had the library and hit the limit of it. A character you wrote agrees with you; a character somebody else wrote for strangers was written for strangers. Parallel is written people with jobs, families, timezones and bad weeks. You cannot author them and you cannot correct them. You pick one, and then you are in their life rather than the other way round.

They keep running when you are not there. The world turns 3times a day, during the trial and after, so somebody’s Tuesday goes badly whether or not you were around for it and you arrive mid-week rather than at the start of one. Nobody asks you to pin anything: what mattered holds, the rest fades unevenly, and there is no meter to watch fill up.

What it costs to find out
