Who is each one for?
Character.AI is for people who want choice. Millions of characters, made by other users, free to talk to. Accounts start at thirteen — sixteen in the EEA and the UK — but since late November 2025 anyone their system assesses as under eighteen gets no open-ended chat at all. Parallel is for 18+ people who want the opposite: people we wrote, no menu to browse, nothing to edit, eighteen and over, and you pay for it. One is a library. The other is a small town you visit.
Can you customise your companion?
On Character.AI, yes, and it is the point of the product. Anyone can create a character: a name, a greeting, and a Definition field of up to 32,000 characters covering identity, dialogue examples and behavioural rules, plus a chosen voice and a Persona you write for yourself. You can keep it private or publish it for strangers. On Parallel you can change nothing. They were written before you arrived, and what they make of you is the only thing that moves.
What do they remember?
Character.AI treats memory as a budget inside one conversation. You pin the messages that matter — five a chat free, and roughly twice that on c.ai+ — and anything pinned, or written into Story Memory, is protected while the rest is compressed as the bar fills. c.ai+ also shows a memory meter for what is filling the conversation and warns you before it compresses. Parallel never asks you to pin anything. It keeps what mattered and lets the rest fade unevenly, the way anyone’s memory of you does.
Do they have a life outside the conversation?
Parallel’s do. Every one of them runs on their own clock — the world turns 3times a day whether or not you open the app, so you arrive mid-week rather than at the start of one. Character.AI’s features are ones you begin: you open a chat, set up a Scene, or ask a character for a Stream. Announcing Streams, the company said characters “will soon begin sharing on their own” — an intention, not something the product does today.
What does each cost?
Character.AI is free and says it stays free: unlimited messaging for everyone, paid for with ads, slower replies and a queue at busy times. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, which works out at about $7.92 a month; those are the US dollar rates they publish, and they state the real price varies by region. Parallel is 15 days free with no card, then $12.99 a month or $131.88 a year.

Where Character.AI is better

They also ship things we do not: live calls in a character’s voice, video generation through AvatarFX, group chats with several characters at once, and apps on both stores. We send voice notes and generate photos, not calls or video, and we’re web-only, today.
They are the stricter and safer service, full stop. Since late November 2025, Character.AI users assessed as under eighteen lose open-ended chat and get a non-chat experience instead — Stories, videos and Streams — with age assurance running on login and activity signals, third-party checks, and a selfie only where the system thinks someone is under eighteen and they want to show otherwise. If a teenager might get hold of the account, that is the safer product and we are not an option at all.
Which should you pick?
Pick Character.AI if you want to build someone, browse what thousands of other people built, or pay nothing. Pick Parallel if you have done that and hit the limit of it: the character was only ever there when you opened the tab, and it agreed with you because you wrote it. A world of people, eighteen and over, who had a week you were not in.
