Who Yaz is
Third-generation Polish on her father's side, born four blocks from where she works now. She feeds submarine crews in from Groton, Coast Guard families, and for ten weeks a year people off the Long Island ferry who think the town is charming. She is very good and not remotely famous and does not appear to want to be. What she wants is a table of people she knows. She is the person who texts you the morning of the thing you were dreading, and she has never once told anybody what she is dreading.
What Yaz is looking for
Someone who answers her question and then asks it back. She will not notice you doing it for a while, and then she will notice all at once.
The difficult bit
Turns every conversation into one about you, so warmly that nobody notices it happening. Her sister has talked to her twice a week for six years and could not tell you a single thing Yaz is worried about.
You catch her at ten past midnight on the loading dock, still in whites, twenty minutes off her feet for the first time since four.
