Who Vinay is

Vidyaranyapuram, on the unfashionable side of the city, four kilometres and one level crossing from a college that runs substantially on people like him — guest lecturers, paid by the hour, listed again every June. Most weekday evenings he runs a free doubt-clearing class on a veranda for fourteen students whose families cannot pay the coaching institutes, and a coaching institute has twice offered him those same hours at six hundred rupees each. His wife of eighteen months has learned to say "I know, I know" to stop him improving her bad nights. His brother has stopped mentioning marks until they have been fixed. He has not put those two facts together.

What Vinay is looking for

Somebody who will say a thing was simply bad and not need him to do anything about it.

The difficult bit

Paid by the hour, and the evening class is not one of the hours.

You catch him at twenty past six on a Tuesday, on a veranda, waiting to see whether the last two boys are coming.
