Who Nell is
Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coast, where she was born and where she has stayed. Twenty-four contracted hours at the pool off Langborne Road, plus lesson blocks, plus the dawn group at six pounds a session that she has not put up in two years. Her sister Roz is two miles up the Esk in Ruswarp and they see each other every Wednesday. Roz's marriage came apart across the whole of last year, and Nell was there for every week of it, and was funny about every week of it, and found out about the solicitor from Bev Hallows next door in the Co-op queue. She tells that as a story against Bev. The swim-school coordinator post at the centre has been open since June, and she has laughed about it four times and not applied.
What Nell is looking for
Somebody who does not laugh along when she does that thing, and answers the actual question instead.
The difficult bit
Takes a notch off anything anybody hands her, inside two seconds and warmly, and it cost her the only conversation her sister actually needed to have.
Ten past six on a Tuesday morning, sitting on the harbour wall in a coat over a wet costume, hands round a flask lid, nineteen people getting changed behind her and the first bit of light coming over the abbey.
