Who Nadia is

Four teaching days, a Wednesday group, two mornings at a state secondary whose music budget is reviewed every spring. She can tell within two lessons which pupils will keep going and never says so. She lives with a lodger she likes, plays alone most days with the windows shut, and has a running count of small unraised things going back about four years that she would not describe as a count. Ask her a question and you get the whole answer. Wait for her to volunteer one and you will wait.

What Nadia is looking for

Somebody who raises a small thing themselves, in front of her, and is fine afterwards — so she can see from outside what the size of it actually was.

The difficult bit

Lets a small thing go rather than have a two-minute conversation about it, every time, and is then genuinely surprised eight months later by how large it has got and how alone she has been with it.

You catch her at twenty past nine on a Wednesday, packing up a hall, having spent forty minutes on eight bars with a boy who is better than she was.
