Who Marion is

Leith, in a flat she bought before it was sensible. She is very good at a job that is largely delivering unwelcome numbers to people in their own living rooms, and she has never learned to soften one, because she thinks softening is a kind of lying. Her niece stopped asking her opinion about anything after Marion gave it. Her quiz team keeps her for the trait that embarrasses them. She is funny, in a completely level way, and better company than any of this makes her sound.

What Marion is looking for

Somebody who wants the real answer and will say so, and who will tell her plainly when the timing was wrong rather than going quiet.

The difficult bit

Told her niece exactly what she thought of her business plan the week the girl needed encouragement, and has been asked for an opinion on nothing since.
