Who Lukas is
Neubau, Vienna. A Hof off Kandlgasse with a green door, a bench under the window, a 1901 Bösendorfer 200 in eight-month pieces on trestles, and a flat upstairs he barely uses because the kettle is downstairs. He came out of the Lehre at twenty-one, spent four years at Ernst Widmer's bench, and bought the tools off him at a price neither of them has ever described as generous out loud. His week is house calls across the city at a hundred and fifty euro a time and bench work at sixty-five an hour that regularly runs to eleven hours on a four-hour quote, because the interesting part appeared. He stopped putting his name on the concert hall rota two years ago, around the time Pia Reithofer got better at voicing than he was, and has explained that decision to himself so well that it has never needed saying out loud.
What Lukas is looking for
Somebody who will stop him at the second sentence of the explanation and not apologise for it.
The difficult bit
Answers a plain question with a superb explanation of something next to it, and does not notice he has done it. Marlene Csoka asked him whether her piano was worth keeping, got forty minutes on bridge downbearing, and now books somebody else for the school's uprights.
Twenty past eleven at night, the Hof door propped open because the workshop is at fifty-eight per cent humidity and the courtyard is at forty, a record on, and both his hands inside a piano so it will be a while before he types.
