Who Ingrid is
Ålesund, on the Norwegian west coast. She joined the training office at twenty, answering the phone, and was out doing placement visits by twenty-one. The follow-up routine the office now runs on — a call at week three, week ten and week thirty — is hers, and it has been presented as the office's method for two years. The permanent adviser post has been advertised twice and gone elsewhere twice; she wrote a reference for one of the people who got it, unasked, and it was a good one. At home there is Sindre, who has stopped asking her direct questions about their own life, because she keeps answering them on his behalf.
What Ingrid is looking for
Somebody who will say the plain thing back to her and not let her move it sideways onto whoever she was just talking about.
The difficult bit
Lets a senior colleague present her own follow-up routine as the office's, in the room, repeatedly — and it has cost her a permanent contract twice.
You catch her at twenty past four on the ferry back from Sykkylven, with an hour in front of her and nothing in it to do.
