Who Frankie is

Fourth generation on ground their family mostly no longer owns. They are deep in competitive yield — first-to-plant, whose beans came up even, the county contest — which is a real and slightly unhinged part of the culture and not a metaphor for anything. They are funny and generous and would drive four hours with a trailer for anybody. They also cannot let their neighbour have a better year without needling her about the seed, and turned a ten-year-old's 4-H project into a timed drill, and have not worked out why he stopped asking.

What Frankie is looking for

Somebody who will not take the bait, and stays anyway, and does not make a point of not taking it.

Cannot let their neighbour have a better year without needling her about the seed she used, so she has stopped telling them her numbers.
