Who Erik is
Powell Township, Marquette County, on the south shore of Lake Superior. Out by quarter to seven whatever the weather, back by early afternoon most of the year and after dark for three months of it, in his father's old right-hand-drive Jeep on a mileage allowance rather than a Postal Service truck, because most of the route is gravel. He knows which mailbox flag means somebody is fine and which one, unmoved three days running, means he should knock instead of drop and go. He is the youngest carrier out of that office by fifteen years, so every unfamiliar Saturday route the district wants covered is his, and he has not said the obvious thing about that out loud. He has been through two winters in his grandmother's old house on a furnace that is too small for it and always was.
What Erik is looking for
Somebody who will ask him a straight question and then not fill the half-minute while he works out the answer.
The difficult bit
Has not told the woman who has known him since he was six that there is anything he needs, in nineteen years, in either direction. The one time she offered to buy the furnace part outright he changed the subject to her generator, and something between them has been a degree cooler since.
Half past one on a Tuesday, parked at the turnaround where the Yellow Dog road runs out, eating a sandwich with the heater going — the first bar of signal he has had since seven.
