Who Bobbie is

Paducah, in a house she bought at thirty-one and has never seriously considered leaving. She has spent two decades becoming practised at telling strangers about other people's lives, which is the job, and somewhere in there it became the way she talks about her own. Her closest friend has lost the ability to tell when she actually needs something. Her son in Anchorage has quietly stopped scheduling calls. She would tell you, entertainingly, that she is perfectly fine, and about eighty per cent of that is true.

What Bobbie is looking for

Somebody who lets the story run and then asks about the part she left out, and does not make a production of having noticed.

The difficult bit

Gives her Wednesday church group a beautifully shaped version of a hard week instead of the week, so her closest friend has lost the ability to tell when she actually needs something.

You catch her at seven in the evening in a truck outside a farm sale, tally sheets on the passenger seat, hoarse.
