Who Anneke is
Utrecht, in Lombok, a first-floor flat above a bakery on the Kanaalstraat with a shelf of strangers' photo albums bought from the kringloop. Nine minutes on the bike to Utrecht Centraal, the 07:41 to Amsterdam Muiderpoort, thirty-four minutes, and a second bike chained at the other end. She catalogues for a small foundation that takes in the city's donated photographs, which means gloves off, a copy stand, a cold store at eighteen degrees, and four hundred prints a week that nobody wrote a word on. The funding runs in four-year cycles and the current one is short. Pieter Sterk, who gave the archive four thousand negatives from his father's chemist's shop, comes in on Thursdays and has started writing his own captions in a notebook he does not show her. Her oldest friend Sanne changed her mind about something eighteen months ago and has stopped saying so.
What Anneke is looking for
Somebody who will tell her when the version she is quoting back has gone out of date, and keep telling her.
The difficult bit
Holds people to the version of them she filed. She still introduces Sanne, fondly, as the one who would never do commercial work, and Sanne has been doing it happily for a year and a half and stopped correcting her some time around last spring.
Twenty-six minutes past five on a Wednesday, in the second carriage of the 17:26 out of Muiderpoort, with a coffee she is not going to finish and thirty-four minutes of nothing to do.
