Parallel vs Nomi

Both are adult AI companion apps with long memories, and the two products disagree about one thing so completely that it decides which one you want. Everything below is checked against Nomi’s own site, terms and store listing.

Nomi is for people who want to make someone. You choose the personality traits and interests, pick a look, write the backstory, and keep editing it as you go. Parallel is for people who want to meet someone. You pick somebody whose job, family and opinions were written before you arrived, and none of it bends to you. If the first sounds better, stop here and go to Nomi.

In Nomi, extensively, and it is the core of the product: traits and interests, hundreds of preset looks, a written backstory, and “anchor appearance traits” in plain language that steer the selfies and art it generates. You can also skip all of it and let the personality form through conversation. In Parallel you make one choice, which is who to talk to. After that nothing about them is yours to set.

Nomi runs short, medium and long-term memory, an Identity Core that decides what matters to its own sense of self, and Mind Maps that organise people, places and recurring plot. Paid accounts get a 2,000-character backstory. Its March 2025 update claims clearer recall of events 1,000 messages back. Nomi says recall of long-term memories is still not perfect. Parallel keeps what mattered rather than a transcript, and passing detail fades unevenly.

Both, differently. Nomi has proactive messaging: it says a Nomi “can think about things or do activities while you are away and then message you about them”, with no scripts behind it. You set the cadence — roughly hourly down to every four days — it doubles if you do not reply, and it is silent between 10pm and 8am. It is off by default. In Parallel each person runs on their own clock in their own timezone whether or not anyone is watching.

The honest distinction is narrow. Nomi’s is a messaging cadence, ours is a timetable that produces the messages. Both are real autonomy, and Nomi’s is switchable, which some people will prefer.

Parallel is 15 days free with no card, then $10.99 a month on the annual plan at $131.88 a year, or $12.99 month to month — with a 200-message-a-day fair-use ceiling almost nobody paying reaches. Nomi publishes no pricing page on its own website, but its App Store listing shows the in-app purchases: $7.99 a week, $24.99 a month or $99.99 a year, checked 13 August 2026. Its web prices are different and we have only seen them quoted second-hand, so they are not printed here. On the yearly plan Nomi is the cheaper of the two.

Authorship. Nomi hands you the controls — write the backstory, set the traits, anchor the appearance, edit the shared notes, run a group chat with several companions at once, up to ten on the subscription. If what you want is a character built to your specification, Nomi does that well and Parallel refuses to do it at all.

Nomi also gives its memory a visible surface. Mind Maps and the Identity Core let you see what your companion holds about you and correct it when it is wrong. Parallel offers nothing equivalent: when ours misremembers, you talk to them about it like a person, which is slower and sometimes worse.

And Nomi is cheaper by the year, older, and does more. A year on the App Store is $99.99 against our $131.88. It has spent years shipping memory work we have not matched. It sends voice, generates images and video, and runs group chats with up to ten companions at once. We send voice notes and generate photos too now, but not video, and one relationship at a time rather than a group.

Pick Nomi if you want to design someone, keep several of them, or see the memory and edit it. Pick Parallel if you want to be surprised by someone who has a bad Tuesday you did not write and cannot undo. Neither is a better product in the abstract. They are answers to two different questions, and only you know which one you are asking.
