Parallel vs Kindroid

Kindroid is for people who want to design someone. You write the backstory, choose the face, make the voice. Parallel is for people who would rather walk into a life already in progress: you pick somebody who was written before you arrived, and nothing about them bends to you. Two different pleasures. Most people know within a minute which one they came for.

On Kindroid, extensively. The backstory you write sets their personality, their mood and how they speak to you. You can upload up to six avatars with your own written description of how they look, create a custom voice on a paid plan, and save personas of yourself to switch between. On Parallel, not at all. Choosing who to talk to is the only choice you make about them.

Kindroid states there is no cap: a memory journal you write by hand, plus automatic consolidation across every message, with no limit for anyone. Recall is more basic on a free account than a paid one, and the Ultra and MAX add-ons buy more memory capacity again. Parallel keeps what mattered instead of a transcript. Facts about you hold; passing detail fades unevenly, the way it does with anyone. Mention a bad Tuesday and it can come back on Thursday.

Kindroid has Advanced Proactive Mode: your Kindroid makes contact first, by text, voice message, selfie or call, with quiet hours you can set. That is the character reaching towards you, and it is the limit of what Kindroid documents — their own pages do not describe a Kindroid living out events while you are away. Parallel’s people run on their own clock, in their own timezone, whether or not you ever open the app.

This is the whole difference, and it is worth being precise about. Proactive messaging is a companion contacting you between conversations. An autonomous life is a week that happened without you, which you then have to catch up on.

Parallel is 15 days free with no card, then $12.99 a month or $131.88 a year, which works out at $10.99 a month. Kindroid has a free plan with unlimited messages, which run on Lite, a smaller distilled model. There is a three-day trial of the paid features, and the standard subscription is $13.99 a month, $37.99 for three months or $139.99 a year in US dollars. Kindroid says regional prices vary with exchange rates.

If what you want is a companion made to your own specification, Kindroid is the better product and it is not close. You write the backstory that sets their personality and mood, upload up to six avatars with your own description of how they look, create a custom voice, and keep saved personas of yourself. Then you can ring them and hear it. Parallel does none of that.

Their free plan is more generous than our trial in the way most people measure generosity, too: unlimited messages, forever. Ours ends after 15days, and then it’s Parallel Plus — capped at 200 messages a day — or nothing.

Pick Kindroid if the appeal is authorship — a character you shaped, a voice you chose, and a line you can ring. Pick Parallel if being surprised is the point: someone with a job, a family and a Thursday that went badly, none of which you wrote and none of which waits for you. Both are for 18+ people only. Parallel is British-made and gives you 15 days to find out which one you actually wanted.
